The Courtyards, located at 1307 Clifton Street, NW is ECI's third collaboration with Nelson Architects. This ground-up new construction for Zusin Development is wedged tightly between two existing buildings, with no access from the rear. These constraints made this a challenging building to construct.
Framed in engineered lumber and sheathed in a combination of brick, stone, glazed block and metal wall panels, the building's unusual H-shaped plan yields an abundance of heavily windowed walls, to take advantage of the building's perch atop the highest point in Washington, DC. The 14-unit walk-up also features in-ground parking, "Romeo and Juliet" balconies, high ceilings and premium appliances, such as built-in Viking refrigerators.
